Difference between DRUG and MEDICINE

Dear all, in this article we will try to demonstrate 5 differences between drug and medicine. However, if any of you can share other good points please share with us we will try to incorporate those points as well.


1. According to World Health Organization (WHO), “A drug is any substance or product that is used or intended to be used to modify of explore the physiological systems or pathological states for the benefit of the recipient”. 1. Medicine is the formulated form of drug having definite dose, dosage form, labeling and packaging.
2. Drug contain only single active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). 2. Medicine may contain more than one active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).
3. Drug do not have any determined quantity, it means drug do not have definite dose and dosage form. 3. Medicine has definite dose and dosage form.
4. It is usually used for prevention and diagnosis purposes. 4. It is used for treatment of diseases.
5. All drugs are not medicine. 5. All medicines are drug.
