English Proficiency Test – IELTS and TOEFL
International students applying for programs taught in English as part of their qualifications must provide evidence of their English skills. This ensures they have the English skills necessary to understand academic writing and effectively communicate with their supervisor.
Here is an overview of the most widely-accepted English proficiency tests: the TOEFL and the IELTS.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
TOEFL is probably the most commonly used and best – known test of English skills.
Exam Duration: 4 hours
Format
Currently, there are two formats: the internet-based test (iBT) and a modern paper-based test that replaces the old paper-based method that is no longer used.

Reading, listening, speaking, and writing
Scoring
Total Score of 120. Each section -30. Scores are valid for 2 years.
In many universities scores are required between 90 – 100, equal to B2 in the level of competence of the Common European Framework (CEF). In addition to a minimum overall score, some universities also require a minimum score in each section.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Universities and employers all over the world are widely known to IELTS.
Two versions of the test are available: an academic version and a general version. Although universities require the academic version, some government bodies use the general version for employment and for immigration permits.
Exam Duration: 3 hours
Format
Unlike the TOEFL, the IELTS’s speaking portion is done in person with an examiner. The IELTS also has more diverse question formats, with a mix of multiple-choice, diagram labeling, matching, short answer and completion of sentences.
Sections
Listening – 40 min
Reading – 1 hour
Writing – 1 hour
Speaking – 11 to 14 min
Scoring
Scores range from 1 – 9 including half scores. Scores are valid for 2 years.
Many universities require scores in the 6 – 7 scale, which is equal to B2 / C1 in the CEF level of competency.
